White-water skills weekend.

Barrington River 21-22 October 2017


Meet at Barrington Bridge Reserve 9.00am Saturday 21 October

Paddlers will be placed into two groups.

All paddlers will need-


Safety helmet

Suitable clothing and footwear

Spray cover for Group A

Note Wing paddles are not suitable


Group A

Peer paddle with Ray Baxter

Paddlers in Group A need to have the following skills-

Ability to read white-water

Suitable kayak and associated equipment for grade 3 rapids.

Knowledge of all basic paddle strokes eg.bow-rudder,draw strokes

Be able to break-in and out of eddies.

Good ferry-glide technique.

Self rescue ability.


If you need to learn all the above them Group B is for you.


Group B

Peer paddle with Ron and Carrie Elliott

Paddlers need kayaks that are suitable for grade one(easy)white-water.

Note touring kayak more than 4m will be unsuitable for this weekend.

Group B will be shown skills on Saturday at Barrington Reserve to refine paddle strokes.

Paddlers in Group B will be demonstrated-

Ferry-glide.Both facing upstream and down-stream

Sweep strokes

Draw strokes


Slap support recovery stroke

How to read white-water in order to find the correct path down rapids.

Self rescue

Suitable equipment will be shown along with safety procedure.

After a day of skill development Group B will be paddling on Sunday from Rocky Crossing to Barrington Bridge.

Grade one rapids will be negotiated with brand new skills.

Rocks will be avoided by your use of bow-rudders, draw-strokes and your accurate placement of your kayak into the 'V'.


Camping is available at Barrinton Bridge Reserve.Most members will camp here.

Other quality accommodation is available in Gloucester and surrounding region.
